Sergeant Reckless was her name, and she was the horse renowned for carrying wounded soldiers on and off the battlefield and making solo trips across combat zones to deliver supplies.A widely celebrated national hero, Reckless was first featured in 1954 in the Saturday Evening Post and more recently in 1997 when LIFE magazine published an edition lauding history’s one hundred all-time heroes. Equine enthusiast Robin Hutton learned about Sergeant Reckless and spearheaded the effort to commission a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle (Quantico), VA. In July of 2013, the statue was unveiled. A second monument is planned for Camp Pendleton, where Reckless lived out her days and is buried.
Hutton has now written the first-ever full biography of Sergeant Reckless, who earned two Purple Hearts for her heroic efforts (among other military decorations). Hutton has spoken with the Marines who fought alongside Reckless and tells the complete and captivating tale of how a would-be Korean racehorse became one of the greatest Marine wartime heroes. Sgt. Incredibly well-researched and beautifully written, Sgt. Reckless: America's War Horse tells the tale of a tough little mare named Reckless, who became a Marine, and a war hero. There is plenty in these pages for the history buff and those interested in the Korean War. While I learned much from those parts, it was Hutton's ability to capture Reckless' endearing personality, indomitable work ethic, and the connection she had with her fellow Marines that made me fall in love with her story. Sgt.The story is great. The writing is not. Don't get me wrong - it's not a struggle to read. Quite the opposite, but not in the right direction, because it reads like online news, and not a book it's supposed to be.The first part is devoted to Reckless and the Korean War; interesting, and covers all that there is to the story. But then there is the second part, which tells us how Reckless was transported to American soil (in details that no one cares about), how her foals were named (I'm pretty
Lucky me, I was able to get an advance copy of this all-American war horse story...and then I got to meet the author! I was up half the night my first day in this book. It is that good. The author does a great job of portraying the character of a Noble animal during terrible circumstances.
Admittedly, I probably shouldn't have read this directly after finishing Laura Hillenbrand's masterful WWII tome "Unbroken," but I did and I can't take that back. As a result, I spent my entire reading of this book thinking about how much better I would have liked it if Hillenbrand had gotten to tell the story.To be clear, I reserve no critical commentary for the tale itself, which is mesmerizing and a tearjerker in places. What an inspiring story and life this small little mare had. She had a definitive personality and joined right in with her troops learning to drink beer and coke. She lived beside her unit, sleep with them and ate their same food. She loved pancakes, bacon and eggs (no pepper), and peanut butter sandwiches. She'd walk into the mess tent for her chow just like any other Marine. I found the funniest story to be during her run up against the commander of a U.S. Naval LST during amphibious training.
