This was awful. Ugh. I stopped reading the moment when a man said to his sons they had to rape other man's daughters to avenge their mother. The story already had some things I didn't like AT ALL but this was so awful 🙁. I'm done with the book and with the author 🙁.Finished the book (in Mandarin) in one day at the airport. The style of Chronicle of a Blood Merchant is similar with that of To Live, as it was humorous, dark and resigned. A page tuner and an easy-read, I found this book a pleasant surprise. And I enjoyed it from start to end. There were many unexpected plots that made me laugh and cry. The protagonist, Xu, is a strong character. It says: "One of the decade's 10 most influential books in China"..."Vital and electric...Yua Hua's characters are real people" ...ect.While some of the scenes in this book are memorable, I did not find it very involving as a book. The title promises a grand epic, but the novel turns out to be the simple tale of a silk factory worker, Sanguan, his wife, the Dough Queen and his three sons , one of whom, Yile, turns out not to be his son at all.There is an appealing naievity about the characters. So this book was very good! I really liked it. Its a heart breaking story of a poor man that gives every bit of him self to help his family, but they never come around and help him until the end. I didnt like the way any of the characters treats one an other. But I guess thats just differences between time and culture. And it is so different from my own world. This story was heartbreaking for me and the main character deserves a lot more that he got.
It was billed to me by a friend as being not only a good story but a great first novel to read in Chinese.... and that it was!!If you're thinking of reading it in Chinese: DO IT. The sentences aren't crazy long, and after certain words are used once, they're most likely used in the book again. Plus it's supposed to be written from a peasant's (er, small-town rural) perspective, so the language is not ridiculously complicated while still being full of wonderful descriptions.The English
